But I love the football that brings people together across religious divides, geographic divides, political divides. I love the fact that for ninety minutes in a rectangular piece of grass, people can forget hopefully, whatever might be going on in their life, rejoice in this communal celebration of humanity. The biggest diverse, invasive or pervasive culture that human kind knows is football and I love the fact that at the altar of football human kind can come worship and celebrate. x

200 years ago today, USS Constitution defeated the HMS Java after a 3 hour engagement, her second major victory of the war following the battle with HMS Guerriere in August earlier that year.

Ringling Bros. “training” methods:

Beat unruly or depressed elephants that fail to cooperate with bullhooks

Punish elephants and babies that do not want to work by isolating them from the other animals and starving them

Play loud rock music to drown out the sounds of babies screaming

Depriving the elephants of play

Try and convince the public that “conga lines” and “headstands” are natural elephant behaviours and that there is nothing cruel about it

Use electric hotshots on babies or aggressive elephants if bullhooks aren’t enough to get them to submit

Cases:

Riccardo - 8 month old baby broke two legs after being forced to sit on a plastic tub that was too high for him, like the photo above. He was made to walk 100 yards to the barn before he collapsed in shock and agony. He never got up again.

Birthing - Mothers in labour are chained for 15 hours straight. When the calf is born, it drops onto solid concrete floor. If the calf is male it is usually euthanized or sold on.

Hiding the cruelty - in order to pass inspection, keepers smear mud onto the legs of elephants, covering up any lesions or burns. Hot shots are kept well hidden.

Revenge - Elephants that retaliate or try and hurt their keepers back are severely punished. They are electrocuted for about ten minutes. One elephant was in so much pain it regurgitated water. They are beaten for several minutes with bullhooks and electrocuted. Sometimes the keepers get so worn out from the beating that they take a break and then come back later to “finish the job”.

Replacements - If babies die whilst travelling on the road, they simply “send for another”, as if they are mere props.

Power tricks - some tricks put so much strain on the animal’s body that they suffer severe arthritis and ruptures to their uterus.

Beatings - “I’ve seen elephants being beaten who have no idea why they are being beaten or what is expected of them. They start randomly lifting one leg, and then another, and another, and lifting their trunk, hoping some trick will satisfy the trainer and make the beating stop.”

It’s one of the best rivalries in all of sports, so needless to say there is no such thing as a friendly match when the United States take on Mexico. However, there was just one element missing from the US-Mexico rivalry: a US win in Mexico. That’s right, it’s been 75 years and the US had never won a match in Mexico. Their record? 0-23-1.

Well, after last night in the legendary Azteca stadium it’s 1-23-1, and the barrier of prestige Mexico fans held over the heads of American fans has been breached. Chicharito was silenced. Jurgen Klinsmann was vindicated. And a Mexican-American from California, Michael Orozco Fiscal, was the unlikely hero as he kissed the US badge in ecstasy. On June 1, 1812, President James Madison sent Congress a message asking for a declaration of war with Great Britain. The House adopted the war resolution on June 4 by a vote of 79-49, and it was then sent to the Senate for approval. The Senate made amendments to the House war resolution, and voted in favor of the changes on June 17, 19-13. On June 18 the House approved the amendments. President Madison signed the declaration of war on June 18.

This June marks the 200th anniversary of the declaration of the War of 1812. The “House Declaration of War” of June 4, 1812 is undergoing conservation treatment. The previously laminated document was treated to remove cellulose acetate. After delamination, a conservator repaired tears and filled losses. This ‘during treatment’ photo shows a new paper insert being fitted to fill a loss. Visit the U. S. Capitol Visitors’ Center fall exhibition to see the completed document on display.

On June 4, 1919, the suffrage amendment passed both houses of Congress and was sent to the states for ratification. Initial efforts to secure the right to vote for women in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s achieved some success at the state level, but women’s organizations finally concluded that an amendment to the U.S. Constitution was essential for woman suffrage. World War I played an important role in helping women achieve the right to vote as many women began to work outside the home to support the war effort. In 1917 President Woodrow Wilson called for a Constitutional amendment, and though the House passed a woman suffrage amendment in 1918, it failed in the Senate, largely because of the opposition from southern states. After the amendment passed Congress in 1919, many states quickly approved it, and on August 18, 1920 Tennessee became the 36th state to approve the amendment. Two weeks later, on August 26, Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed the certification that the required number of states had ratified the Nineteenth Amendment. However, in early 1920, five states rejected the amendment. Mississippi was among them. Political cartoonist Clifford K. Berryman portrays the Mississippi rejection as an April Fool’s joke played on the suffrage movement.
